Shine your light in the hardest situations

Can our light shine brighter by serving others?

"My mission in life is not merely to survive but to THRIVE." -Maya Angelou

I was watching my niece one morning. She was so full of life and energy singing song after song after song. She’d go from “Wheels on the Bus” to “Baby Shark” and finally to “Jesus Loves Me”. But one song that she loves to sing the most is “This Little Light of Mine”. She sings that song at the top of her lungs with every chance she gets. Her favorite part of the song is when she yells “Don’t let Satan blow it out *big puff* I’m gonna let it shine!” She always sticks her finger up and blows it out like a birthday candle.

And that got me thinking. This little 2-year-old has the brightest light of anyone I’ve ever known. She hasn’t let the world or the pressures in it squander it because she doesn’t know any better. She hasn’t felt pressure at work or had any expectations to live up to. She is a child that is carefree and innocent. Which also led me to think… I would be so brokenhearted if someone blew out my sweet niece’s light, the light that shines bright and proud.

The workplace can sometimes be the hardest place to let our light shine, but it doesn’t have to be. Maybe you face tight deadlines. Maybe you and your boss don’t quite see eye to eye. Maybe you feel like you don’t contribute as much as others do. Or maybe you just feel like you have no true purpose. No matter the situation, we have a duty to not only others but to ourselves to shine our light in the hardest of places.

This goes so much farther than just having a positive attitude. Have a positive attitude AND make your coworkers smile. Go out of your way to serve others. Leave a trail of peace. Work hard with passion and purpose. Be humble. Bring hope. Lift others up and encourage them with every moment that you get. We all have different purposes, roles and strengths, so have faith in your purpose and other’s purposes. Don’t squander someone’s light. Let their light shine and yours will shine just as bright.
